FPA Houston President’s Letter

January 6, 2020

Happy New Year, New Decade and Welcome to the 2020’s. FPA of Houston continues to be one of the best communities for financial planners to network, learn and be part of something great in the community. This is really an exciting time for all of us as our industry of financial planning has turned 50 years old.

Last year was a very exciting and outstanding year.  We made some changes to bring more value, activities and FUN to the chapter meetings and events. We received a lot of positive feedback and we are making changes as best as we can to benefit our members.

Before I continue, I would like to thank a few folks because we would not be able to provide our members with great events if it was not for these people:

  1. Our loyal sponsors who continue to support us and provide additional layers of benefits to our chapter. In particular, I want to thank our sponsor of the year Bridgeway for hosting our strategic planning meeting at their headquarters and giving us a tour.
  2. Our loyal members that continue to support our local community and engage with our chapter.
  3. Our wonderful Career Development director Jacquelyn Girling for serving her term on the board and doing not one, but two, successful career day events in 2019.
  4. If you have not heard, FPA Houston won two outstanding achievement awards at the Chapter Leaders Conference for extraordinary achievements in 2018.  I would like to thank Don McCurdy for his Pro Bono leadership and Carrie Ousley for starting our successful woman’s group.
  5. The board of directors who work really hard to provide you with events, value, opportunities to do great community work and more.
  6. Our very own executive director Melisa Hall who loves our chapter and their members and does an outstanding job to provide solutions.

Now for the good stuff, the Houston board of directors has been planning to provide even more opportunities to engage, belong, volunteer and learn this new year.

  1. Our inaugural awards ceremony will be held on January 23rd and we will be celebrating 50 years of financial planning, local volunteers and the chapter accomplishments. We will be recognizing our Young Guns Award recipient, David Wanja; and Honors Award recipient, Joseph Birkofer.

  2. We are committed to enhance the experience of our NEW financial planners so the NexGen group is adding more events, socials and activities to engage

  3. We also feel that there are a lot of solo practitioners that need a place to connect so we are creating the “SOLO” practitioner networking group later this year

  4. Last year we made some changes that added more value and fun, so we are bringing back the following:

    1. CFP Ethics at Karbach Brewery, followed by “brews & bites” as well as networking! Post Tax Day, on April 23rd

    2. The Symposium last year was so energetic and engaging but we are moving it to September 23rd so that we do not interrupt your summer vacation

    3. The success of the Career Day will continue in the Fall

  5. We will have even more to come as the year goes by so make sure you are on the look out for emails or events calendar:

Our industry still has a lot more work to do in order to be recognized as such but there has never been a better time to be a financial planner or part of FPA as we celebrate a 50-year milestone.

I hope you are as excited as I am with some of the things that the Houston chapter is doing, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events.
