FPA Houston President’s Letter

January 2, 2019

Happy New Year and I welcome you back to the FPA of Houston. It seems that change is all around us this year from our location change of the chapter meetings to the one FPA network initiative. It is surely going to be an interesting year and I cannot wait to see what else it brings.

On the one FPA network initiative, your local board had the opportunity to engage with the national board about these initiative changes on several occasions.  We made sure to voice our thoughts and concerns to ensure fairness for our chapter.  We will continue to be involved and challenge anything that does not align with our local members best interest.  We may not know all the details in full since it is a work in progress but we welcome questions or concerns to ensure that we can address them going forward. Please visit the www.onefpanetwork.org website for more information.

I want to thank a lot of people for a great 2018 including Melisa Hall, FPA Houston Executive Director, for helping us all. There are a few more that I must mention that also deserve recognition:

  • Volunteering is not free because it takes time away from family and business. Serving others is something to be proud of and we want to thank Don McCurdy for serving ten years on the board as Pro Bono Director and giving his time and dedication to the Houston chapter.

  • Our NexGen group has been making an impact on the board since most of them are part of this group. There have also been program changes that are essential to keep up with the industry of financial planning. Jennifer Prichard has been a tremendous force leading and influencing this movement. We are certainly going to miss her and we appreciate all her help.

  • Obviously, we would not be making so much progress if it were not for Adam Frisco, current Chairman and FPA Houston President 2017-2018. He set the foundation for the chapter to start moving in the right direction. Do not worry because Adam will still be around contributing and helping us with a lot of the events.

I would like to encourage you to meet and get to know the 2019 FPA Houston Board of Directors.  Each of them is full of great ideas and are all passionate about the success of our chapter. So what has the board been planning for 2019? There are so many new things going on but I want to mention the larger events:

  • We moved the chapter meeting location to the HESS Club. The Junior League will be doing major renovations, and this opens the opportunity to explore other options.  However, we will still have our annual FPA Houston Symposium at the Junior League on June 6, 2019.

  • CFP Ethics will be held during the afternoon of Thursday, March 21st at Karbach Brewery. This is one of our most popular events so make sure you sign up early.

  • We are growing our specialized groups because of the success of the NexGen group and the Woman’s group.  We are revamping the Advisor Exchange group and starting the Professional Allies group as well.

  • We are working on pro bono events, member events, media training, career development and more. Let us know if you want to help because we will be having FUN.

I hope that I managed to share some of the excitement that we have in store for this year and we encourage you to get involved and be a part of your association. Our goal is for you to network, learn, help, and to promote your career and personal development. I want to finish by thanking our corporate sponsors for the support and allowing us to elevate the financial planning industry in Houston.

Thank you,

Juan Munoz, CFP®
