FPA Houston President’s Letter

January 8th, 2018

2020 Vision

Future Leaders, Engaged Members, Long-Term Corporate Partnerships

Hello again, and welcome back from your holiday break. 2017 is in the books, and 2018 is a promising blank slate. When I look back at 2017 as President, I am proud of the accomplishments of our Board of Directors and our membership base. To name a few, we’ve created new venues for you share with other like-minded professional through our Advisor Exchanges and Women’s Lunch group, we completed our first ever Career Day event, and we helped lead the way in organizing a Hurricane Harvey Recovery Conference for all those affected. We have worked hard to focus our energy on our 2020 Vision, and we hope that you have noticed. Our Corporate Sponsors sure have, and we continue to encourage you to engage them, learn from them, and give them your time, as they are an integral part of how we all service our clients effectively, not to mention a large contributor to the chapter’s ongoing success.

Last year I mentioned that 64% of our Board was comprised of NexGen! That percentage continues to increase, which is a large part in why we’ve decided to dedicate both more time and dollars to enhancing their membership experience going forward. We know that this cohort isn’t the current majority, but we also accept that it will be our future majority. This may sound a bit gruff at first reading, however, we believe that diversity inspires creativity and drives innovation, as well as provides greater opportunity for personal and professional growth. Actually, FPA National sums it up rather well: “FPA believes that diversity of its membership is critical to serving a diverse public, and is committed to helping create a world where everyone thrives and prospers.” We thank you for your continued acceptance of all members in an ever-changing world and profession.

I’d be shortsighted if I didn’t see the other side of this argument, that if our current group of Board of Directors are mostly young, then how can this qualify as diversity? That’s why we need more of you. Yes you. The past leaders, the members who never have time, the silent objectors. We need your voice to help steer the ship, or I fear that the current majority’s voice will get blown about aimlessly in the wind, never to return to shore.

Ultimately, this is a membership organization, and it’s only as good as the members involved want it to be. We continue to pledge our time and passion to this group, but would love for new voices to help chart our future! As a suggestion, some of our increased areas of focus that we’ll need help with are NexGen, Volunteer Recruitment, and more appealing professional/social events.

If you’re not sure where to start, contact Juan Munoz (President-elect) or I, and we’ll be happy to discuss where your volunteer interests align with our roles and initiatives for 2018.

All the best,
