Re imagining Retirement: Thriving in the Third Age

Dr. Michael Winters, Ph.D.

Many people have a difficult transition from employment to retirement.  Often this is due to a lack of clear understanding about the challenges of post-employment and lack of knowledge about what will lead to a fulfilling retirement.  Though having a clear financial plan for retirement is essential, it is not sufficient.  Understanding and planning for the shifts in identity, status, loss of “wage earner” role, as well as understanding the demands of later life can help those entering or about to enter retirement plan for a more successful adjustment.  This presentation will outline transition concerns with which many entering retirement must contend.  It will also provide a research based profile of the factors that most likely lead to fulfillment in retirement.

Dr. Michael Winters, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Houston, former director of the Rice University Counseling Center and a frequent presenter at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies.  He is a diplomate in the logotherapy - a meaning centered psychotherapy - and has also taught courses at Rice University, Purdue University, the University of Houston and other higher education institutions.
