CFP Board of Standards Ethics Course
Practicing Ethics: Applying CFP Board's Standards of Professional Conduct

This course is designed to meet CFP Board’s 2-hour ethics study requirement for CFP® certificants. Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Define and discuss a financial planning engagement, material elements of financial planning, and the financial planning process 
  • Analyze specific fact patterns to determine if a financial planning relationship exists
  • Differentiate between the standards of care set forth in Rules 1.4 and 4.5 of the Rules of Conduct and apply each standard of care to specific factual situations
  • Identify information that must be disclosed to a client in writing when a CFP® professional is engaged in a financial planning relationship or providing material elements of financial planning
  • Define the information that must be disclosed to clients and prospective clients, when that information must be disclosed and apply each disclosure requirement to a specific factual situation  
  • Apply each practice standard set forth in the “Financial Planning Practice Standards” to a hypothetical financial planning engagement

Since 1988 Tom has specialized in assisting business owners, corporate executives, military veterans, and high net worth individuals create, preserve, and transfer their wealth. Tom designs innovative business continuity plans, asset protection plans and tax favored wealth accumulation and transfer strategies.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Financial Services and has earned the following designations: Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Accredited Estate Planner, Certified Financial Planner, Certified Family Business Specialist, Certified in Long Term Care, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and Special Care Planner.

Tom’s licensing includes life, health, disability, long term care, and he is also a Licensed Insurance Counselor. He is also a member of various industry organizations including the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC).

He is a Dallas native and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and then served five and a half years in the Military Intelligence Corps. He and his wife, Ciel, have been married for more than twenty nine years and have two children, Katharine and Thayer.
