How to Use Mentoring Relationships to Advance Your Career

More professionals these days are actively pursuing mentoring to advance their careers. And whether you're on the giving or receiving end, these types of partnerships can benefit your career.  A mentoring partnership can be rewarding to both people, personally and professionally. It's an opportunity to develop communication skills, expand your viewpoints, and consider new ways of approaching situations. And both partners can advance their careers in the process.

Join our round table discussion about improving in your professional career with Dr. Nathan Harness the Director of Financial Planning at Texas A&M University. We'll dive into how to progress in your career through mentorship, talk about how having a mentor can help you learn and progress in ways that never occurred to you, and discuss how being a mentor can help stretch you to continue learning and being challenged.

Dr. Harness was formerly an Associate Professor of Finance and Executive Director of Global Programs at Texas A&M University-Commerce and Assistant Professor of Financial Planning at the University of Georgia. As Director of Financial Planning at Texas A&M, Dr. Harness manages the curriculum, enrollment, and development of the financial planning minor and certificate program in financial planning. He teaches courses in investments, introductions to financial planning, retirement planning, and financial planning capstone and has lectured internationally on global financial risk and international investing. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Central Arkansas, Master’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University, and Ph.D. in personal financial planning from Texas Tech University. His research on household heuristics, wealth accumulation, and retirement planning has been published in numerous journals including Applied Economic Letters, Financial Services Review, the Journal of Financial Planning, and the Journal of Personal Finance.
